OBAMA-NEXT at the POGO annual meeting
From February 25 to 28, OBAMA-NEXT researcher Raffaele Siano from the French National Institute for Ocean Science and Technology (IFREMER) attended the Partnership for Observation of the Global Ocean (POGO) annual meeting in Penang, Malaysia.
Established in 1999, POGO aims to promote and advance the observation of the global ocean. POGO works closely with international and regional programmes and organisations, and every year its members and partner organisations come together to discuss different topics related to ocean science.
In this year’s meeting, experts discussed topics such as blue carbon, marine heatwaves and the coastal impacts of El Niño. eDNA was also a central theme of the meeting. Indeed, POGO takes particular interest in coordinating and promoting eDNA observing systems across the world through the Ocean Biomolecular Observing Network (OBON). OBON is a programme that aims to monitor, research and understand ocean life by analysing biomolecules.
Appropriately, researcher Raffaele Siano was invited to talk about some of the current European initiatives about eDNA. This presentation was also a great opportunity to share some of the progress made on the OBAMA-NEXT project.
